Partnership for Enhancing Teaching and Leadership in Science (PETALS)

PETALS is an undergraduate teaching assistant program within the School of Life Sciences that offers students the chance to earn course credit while facilitating peer learning and enhancing their own skills and knowledge.

As Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) in PETALS, students receive training to develop essential skills in communication, pedagogy, leadership, and teamwork. These skills are crucial for supporting near-peer learning and are applicable beyond the classroom setting. Additionally, UTAs deepen their understanding of course materials through hands-on teaching experiences.

A distinctive feature of PETALS is its emphasis on the growth and advancement of its participants. As UTAs gain experience, they are offered opportunities for progression within the program, allowing them to refine their teaching abilities and acquire valuable project management and supervisory skills.

PETALS empowers UTAs not only to excel academically but also to thrive in an environment that supports their ongoing personal and professional development, ensuring their success well beyond the program.
